Pets are an important part of the family. They can be incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. There are a few things to consider before deciding on your new family member. Firstly are you going to get a dog or a cat? Dogs are very different to cats. If you ask a ‘dog person’ why they love them, they may say they are loyal, playful, energetic and affectionate. If you ask a ‘cat person’ they will tell you they are all unique and have their own personalities. In general dogs require more constant attention than cats do. Dogs however can fit into your lifestyle more easily as they are generally happy as long as you are there. Cats can be quite specific about the environment they are in.

You also have to consider your lifestyle:

  • How much space do you have?

  • Will you be able to confine them?

  • How much time do you have?

  • Can you afford the expense? Will you consider pet insurance?

  • Will your circumstances be changeable?

  • Do you have other pets and will they get on with the new addition?

Once you have considered these things you can think about where to find yourself a new pet. Here at Border Vets we support the Macintyre Animal Pet Rescue (MAPR). This is a non-profit organisation run by Goondiwindi volunteers. They attempt to rehome unwanted/stray animals and give them a second chance at life. Would you want to adopt your new pet?

If you are getting your new pet from a breeder, make sure you are getting your pet from somewhere that breeds healthy happy pets. You want to make sure that there is a high standard of care. You want to be supporting breeders that are concerned for the welfare of their pets and are committed to finding good homes for the puppies/kittens they have bred.
